Blog Awards: Kreativ Blogger Award, Liebster Blog Award, 7×7 Link Award, the Candle Lighter Award and the Happy Blog Award

Happy Blog Award from Play 101

Have you ever seen those little Russian Dolls? They’re called matryoshkas, or “nesting dolls.” I gave a set to each of my children for Christmas. And those dolls, like this post, bring a little surprise each time you open one. Another doll!

Only instead of dolls, this post is about Blog Awards. Yay!

It’s a wonderful thing — to receive a blog award. If for no other reason than it solidifies what you are doing as a blogger. That is, being a writer.

A blog award is a little something “tangible” you can hold onto and smile upon as you read its description and see why you were chosen to receive it. It connects you to other bloggers and offers a window into worlds you may otherwise have missed. And most of all, it’s a gift.

In that spirit, along with accepting these awards, I have created a new one, the “Happy Blog Award.” You can read about it at the end of this post. Also, this post will be part of my Blog Awards page, which appears in my header. Have you received awards like these? Why not make a page of your own? I won’t mind that you copy!

Kreativ Blogger Award — given by Mama’s Empty Nest

1. Complete the questions below
2. Link back to the person who gave you the award
3. Pass the award on to 5-10 of your fellow bloggers and let them know you did so

Favorite Song?
This is a hard one! I love all types of music. Heavy metal, Opera, Rock, Oldies, Jazz, Country — each medium has something unique to offer, and so many memories to alight. When I hear, “Save a Horse, Ride a Cowboy,” I remember the year I spent in Idaho as a reporter/anchor, which is also where I saw my first rodeo. Have you ever seen Mutton Bustin’?

Do not click on that link if you are faint of heart. The first time I saw this “event,” I nearly had apoplexy.

In any event, back to songs. My favorite song at this very moment is “Over the River and Through the Woods,” because both my children sang this to me as a duet the other day. Priceless.

Favorite Dessert?
Anything chocolate.

What Breaks Your Heart?
Seeing one of my children in pain.

Biggest Fear?
Many of my fears are personal, so of course I’m not going to list them! But a “superficial” fear would have to be Nutcrackers. Not the utensils, but the soldiers with bared teeth. Eek.

What is Perfection?
A noun.

Guilty Pleasure?
Reading a book. I read every night before I fall asleep, as during the day I just don’t have time. Well, I do read during the day, to my children, but as for my own literary choices, there’s nothing I like better than curling up with a good book. Or — on a weekend morning when my husband is home and can take care of the kids, I cannot tell you how happy it makes me to crawl back into bed and open up a book!

And now for the pay-it-forward part. In searching for the origins of this award, which I’m assuming is given to bloggers who are considered creative, I found this link. This blog’s author suggests a new way to interpret the award by “creating” your own new dish. In that theme, here are 5 Kreativ Food Bloggers to whom I would like to pass this award:

Cookie-Spree – because I have made her Mexican Wedding Cookies three times this past month

Michelle & El’s Kitchen – because her recipes are fun, bright and inspiring

She Cooks, He Eats – because the stories which accompany her recipes are like dinner and dessert

Leah’s Thoughts – because she is a dedicated mom who makes great meals for her family

Bento Lunch — because her bento lunches for her children are awe-inspiring

And one more, Sanja Panja – she hasn’t posted in a while, but I know she’s still around, and her food-based posts are moments of welcome calm in my hectic days!

And here are 5 Kreativ non-food bloggers who have unique and enjoyable points of view:

Wacky Womanhood – because she’s a great writer and knows how to laugh at herself

Peg-o-Leg’s Ramblings – because she has the kind of quick wit to make me smile every time

Nineteenfortyeight — because he sees the funny side in just about everything

Bye Bye Brooklyn – because her home renovations are slightly insane (in a good way) and always tempered with humor

Big Happy Nothing — because through her humble attitude, she finds a smile in every day

Congratulations all!

The Candle Lighter Award — given by The Woman At The Well

This award is for those bloggers whose words light the way through the blogosphere. It originated at Believe Anyway, for blogs “that bring light to the world [and offer] inspiration, hope, optimism, good advice, faith filled assurances, and even humor.”

There are no rules for this award. It’s just a way of pointing out inspirational blogs. To that end, I would like to pass the Candle Lighter Award on to the following blogs:

My Wife Doesn’t Think I’m Funny – because he’s funny, good-spirited and big into his family

From Bogans to Mormons – because she has a rich family history and an adventurous life in the Outback

MJ Monaghan – because he is gracious, insightful and welcoming

Technicolor Day Dreams – because she has one of the most beautiful outlooks on the world I’ve come across

Arbor Familiae – because he cares about history, family and sees through to the important things in life

The Barefoot Indian – because she is a loving frontier mom whose boys live an adventure every day

Being Arindam – because he speaks from the heart and is curious about why we do what we do

An Improbable Life – because she is bright, loving and appreciates her improbable life

The Island Traveler – because he is a dedicated father with an overwhelming love for his family

Notes to My Muses — because my friend Jane has come up with a unique and delightful way to blog: by writing letters to her favorite authors

Mama’s Empty Nest — because she fills up her empty nest with love every day, family when she can, and gratefulness always

And since there are no “rules” for this award, I would like to give it to the person who gave it to me, The Woman at the Well, as she is a source of devotion and inspiration and already has all these awards anyway!

Congratulations all!

And finally, I’d like to introduce the Happy Blog Award!

I have a problem. I know this. I say “thank you” too much. You’d think I’d be finished — after a post like this! But I can’t stop myself. Sometimes I even say it twice, because I think I may not have been heard the first time.

To that end, the Happy Blog Award is for a blogger who has personally made you happy. Someone who you consider a friend, someone who has put a smile on your face, left a comment that made your day, wrote a post you thought about all week, made you laugh out loud — a blogger who shares the happy.

They say good things come in threes. As such, here are the three rules for this award:

1. Thank the person who gave it to you
2. Answer the 3 happiness questions below
3. Thank (and link to) as many bloggers as you like who have made you happy, explain why, and let them know you did so

Happiness Questions:
1. What is your happiest memory?
2. Which of your posts makes you the happiest to have published?
3. What was today’s happiest moment for you?

Happy Bloggers:

1. Didi of My Little Dog – Didi was my first blogging friend. She is a loving wife, mother and dog-owner. When something needs attention, Didi speaks out, as with this post: Open Your Hearts for Red Nose Day. It can be hard to take a stand while blogging, and she did it graciously. For that, I consider her brave. Most of her posts are about her fun-loving dog, George, but those are intertwined with stories of her beautiful daughter, Brianna. When I read Didi’s blog, I sense her measured calm, open-mindedness, dedication and good spirit. Recently, when I was overwhelmed with pre-Christmas cleaning, I left a little rant on her site. She responded with such caring words I was humbled: “Melissa, you’re welcome around our house anytime, whether it’s for a few minutes, a day or a whole month! … I feel a bit sorry for you with all the cleaning and tidying up you have to do all of the time. I can only imagine how hard it is to raise 2 small children so close in age… I’m always amazed at how much mess little kids can make. But I know you’re tough, and I also know that (despite these necessary little moans) you love it. ;) So hang in there, my friend, and when you’re too tired, just look away and leave everything exactly where it is… There’s always tomorrow :) Those are the non-judgmental words of a friend, and they’re exactly what I needed. Thank you!

2. Charles of Mostly Bright Ideas — A blogging friend introduced me to Charles back before he had an uncountable fan base. From the first post I read, I knew he was a magnificent writer, and I soaked up his words like a favorite book. He writes with such depth and emotion, and manages quite singularly to connect that depth to humor. More than once I’ve laughed out loud while reading his posts, and called over to my husband, “Hey, listen to this!” I can’t even list a favorite post; I have too many. They are all so good in fact, he published them in a book that just “dropped” (as the cool people say) last month: Who Knew? Check it out. But what’s really special about Charles is the thoughtful and on-point comments he leaves. Every time I see what he’s written on one of my posts I feel — happy. He told me once I was a master storyteller. He has complimented and appreciated what I do as a mother. And he has a fervent grace to speak his mind, shore up his friends and encourage all who read his words to look at life as a little bit brighter than we’d realized.

3. Priya of Partial View — Priya is one of the most complex and emotionally-layered women I know. She has filled her blog with heart-wrenching stories of grief, and eye-opening tales of hope. She is a true friend, and always knows the right thing to say. Through her, I learned the term “etheree,” which is a type of poetry she humbly displayed on her blog. She writes fiction and non, and the over-arching theme of her posts is the deep emotion that drives us all. She calls her blog “partial view,” as it represents her particular view of the world. She is well aware that her view is not the only one, and strives to understand the varied commenters’ blogs who stop by. She pushes herself to grow, and create things “worthwhile.” But most captivating to me, are the photos she takes herself of the world around her. Things others would simply pass by catch Priya’s attention and are caught by her camera. If I need a break, or a reminder to halt the ebb and flow of daily life, all I need to do is visit one of her peaceful, colorful slideshows.

4. Bob and Jack of Bob and Jack’s Writing Blog — I don’t even have the words to properly thank and appreciate Bob and Jack. They are my writing mentors. They are two published authors I met at a writing group in Seattle I was fortunate enough to stumble into (read: invite myself). Well, Bob invited me, Jack seconded it, but I still felt as if I was invading, scribbling on the same wobbling tables as these two giants. I kicked and screamed and ate up every word they said. They gave me “homework,” so I could harness the power of nouns and verbs. They taught me structure, how to write a mystery, and The Grid. Recently, thanks to modern technology, their thrillers and mysteries and how-to books (The Weekend Novelist Writes a Mystery was the first I purchased, and a must-read for any mystery writer) are undergoing a rebirth on platforms such as Kindle. They have a website, The Weekend Novelist, and between it and their blog (linked above) you could lose yourself for a year and still have more to learn. They are men I am proud to call my friends. It was Jack who first asked me the halting question, “Do you want to be a reader, or do you want to be a writer?” And it was Bob who siphoned all the verbs I knew in my mind, and encouraged me to bare them on the page. They are the reason I believe I am a writer. And for that — I will always be happy.

Those are the very first recipients of the Happy Blog Award. Congratulations!

There are many more new blogs I’ve discovered over the past couple of months, all of which are worth reading, worth commenting on and thought-provoking. I look forward to getting to know those bloggers and more as we slide into 2012. For now, many Happy Wishes to you and yours for the Coming New Year!  :)

      December 28, 2011
  9. Thank you for my Liebster Award, Melissa! It is very fitting, since I am 3/4 German! I am also happy to see many of my blogging buddies in your nominations: Big Happy Nothing, Lenore Diane, Reeling in the Years, The Brown Road Chronicles, and Mostly Bright Ideas…congrats, you guys!

  10. Melissa, I’m honored that you not only read my blog but have given it your Candle Lighter Award! Coming from you, an articulate, witty, and moving blogger, the award has special meaning. You blog so eloquently about parenting that you almost make me wish my nearly middle-aged kids were small again and messing up the house! Your readers are lucky and your little ones blessed.

    December 28, 2011
    • Jane, what a beautiful comment, coming from such a prolific, published and talented author as yourself. I hope people click on your blog, and see the creative way you’ve chosen to utilize this medium. I look forward to more of your stories as we enter the New Year. Best wishes! –Melissa

      December 28, 2011

    Jack

    December 28, 2011
    • Hi Jack — Ha! Too funny. You’ve supported my writing and my ideas since we met in Seattle, and it means so much. I meant every word I wrote.

      December 28, 2011
  14. Congratulations to you Melissa for receiving all these awards yourself. :-)

This post is so generous. You are so thoughtful and kind to include so many of us.
I am honored to be included among wonderful bloggers like Charles, Priya, AA, and Darla and I look forward to reading the other blogs – most of whom I don’t know. (Gosh you read a lot of blogs)

    December 28, 2011
    • Hi Rosie, Thank you for your kind words! They are much appreciated. I do so enjoy your blog, and often I catch your replies on others’ posts (people we have in common) and you always have something good or important to add. I like the way you fight for the environment, and I like the general humor you see in life.

      December 29, 2011
  15. Thank you so much for the Candle Lighter Award, Melissa! You are far too kind.
Oh, I’m still trying to figure out why my blog is not in your blogroll :) ! hehehe

PS I ordered Bob and Jack’s book The Weekend Novelist Writes a Mystery, for my wife, as soon as I saw this in your post.

    December 28, 2011
    • Hi MJ — from what you’ve told me about your wife, I bet the book will be perfect for her! If she has any thoughts or questions, send her my way and I’ll put her in touch with the authors, Bob and Jack (aka Robert J. Ray and Jack Remick).

As for the Blogroll, you would be a welcome addition! I noticed you don’t have one yourself (ahem), but I will add you to mine today. :)

      December 29, 2011
      • Thanks for the offer on getting my wife in touch with Bob and Jack – will let you know once she gets the book.

Melissa, that’s a good point about not having a blogroll! Will put it on my to do list.

        December 29, 2011
      • The to-do list is a good idea. But don’t make it a resolution or you’ll prevent it from ever happening! (Unless you are more gifted than the rest of us…) :)

        December 29, 2011
      • Great I’ve already gone against my most recent post on not procrastinating! :)

        December 29, 2011
  16. Thank you Melissa for thinking of me! I’ve enjoyed getting to know you and glad you feel the same!

    December 28, 2011
    • You’re welcome! Your story about the snow globe still rolls around in my head. And I know you asked me for any input I had towards getting published. I haven’t forgotten, but I’m assuming you know all that I know. Maybe that’s not the case, and we could swap information off blog. I’ll send you an e-mail, if you’d like.

      December 29, 2011
      • Yes, I do probably now know as much as you do. I’ve done a ton of research recently, although I keep hoping someone will send me the “easy answer” which is, of course, not very realistic. I did purchase myself a copy of the Children’s Writers and Illustrators Market for Christmas. Perhaps 2012 is the year I finally get serious about this!!

        December 29, 2011
      • Ah yes, the easy answer. :) If you find it, do tell!

        December 29, 2011
  17. Melissa, congratulations to you for all you awards. It’s clear why you’ve been nominated for so many; your writing is exquisite!

And thank you for nominating me for the Candle Lighter Award. It makes me smile knowing you think my blog brings a tiny glimmer of light to the world. That’s so kind of you!

Your Happy Blog Award is wonderful! I can’t wait to check out all the other blogs you’ve mentioned. This post is extremely generous in so many ways, especially in time and intent. For that, I say a double thank you! :-)

    December 28, 2011
    • Generous in time and intent — thank you so much, Becky! I was working on it for a while before I had it all done and ready to publish. Your blog is a source of history, enrichment and joy for me, and I always look forward to your posts. :)

      December 29, 2011
  18. Yay, thank you so much for the Kreativ Blogger Award! I am truly honored. Thanks for being a fan over the year. I love that I found your blog in 2011!

    December 29, 2011
    • And I love that I found your blog! I am still reeling over the sheer force of your recipes recap page — I will be back to check that one out a lot! :)

      December 29, 2011

  20. Thanks Melissa! What a way to end off a year of many twists & turns. The 7×7 is such a fitting award for a domain name like http://wishiwerethere7.wordpress.com/ and I`m going to fulfill my end of the deal when I get back home in a few days.
My blog is like a wishing well & comments from people like you are the water that makes it flow.

    December 29, 2011
    • Thank you, PL, for the wishing well sentiments — how sweet! :) And yes, I thought the 7×7 would be perfect for you, after the year you’ve had with all your ups and downs (including the farewell to your car). I look forward to reading your acceptance post!

      December 29, 2011
      • I’ve finally sat down and put it together & of course I’m bouncing it back to you. I guess it’s pretty safe to say you don’t have to rewrite your 7×7 Award reply but feel free to check out my picks and lemme know what you think http://wishiwerethere7.wordpress.com/2012/01/05/and-the-winner-is-me/

        January 5, 2012
      • Thank you, PL, for the bounce-back! :) I look forward to reading the posts you’ve chosen for the award. Best wishes for the new year!

        January 9, 2012
  21. Thank you for the award. I am honored. Your blog has been a source of light and inspiration not just because you are a parent too but more because you have a kind and generous heart as person. That is so admirable!
Happy New Year my friend. Wishing you love, joy , tons of laughter, great health and yes, lots of serene peace for 2012….

    December 29, 2011
    • Thank you very much! I feel the same about you and your blog, and I have ever since the first post of yours I read about your plans for your summer vacation with your son, how you looked at one of those brochure racks and decided to do as many as you could! (Do I have that right? I think I’m remembering correctly…)

  22. Melissa, you’ve honored me with your friendship, and that’s the most valuable award you could ever give me. The fact that we’ve become writing buddies makes that friendship all the more special. I’ll try to do justice to the Happy Blog Award — thank you for that. And congratulations on the many well-deserved awards you’ve received. I can’t wait to get a copy of your book, and to help spread the word about it, just as you’ve helped spread the word about all of these amazing bloggers.

Happy New Year to you, Adam, and your two beautiful children. I hope 2012 brings you and your family only good things.

    • Hi Charles, Thank you! And you’re welcome. I’m glad we are writing buddies, and I will continue to promote your work wherever I go. Thank you for the encouragement about mine — I am making good progress. The final games design is finished, and I’ve got all of the games outlined. Now all I need to do is write them out, type them into the design, and take pictures for about 140 of the 150. :) Nothing to it.

  23. Well Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to you and all your awardees! What happy news for many and how dedicated you are to give them the attention they deserve. I love your spirit and I look forward to visiting again.

    • Thank you, Georgette! I am glad I found your blog, as I much enjoyed your recent post about your father.

  24. Congratulations on receiving so many blogging awards. You truly deserve them.

Anyone who writes knows what it takes in time, energy, heart and soul to do it well. Anyone who parents knows what it takes in time, energy, and heart and soul as well. The way that you combine the two and do them with such class is worthy of all the appreciation you’ve received and more.

I wish you and your family all the best in 2012. Keep up the good work!

    • Thank you, Kevin! I really enjoyed your choice of words, “time, energy, heart and soul.” What a beautiful thing to say. I will be reflecting upon those words often as we enter the New Year. And I wish you and your family all the best as well for a happy and healthy New Year! (And I’m waiting on a new post from you… it’s been a while.) :)

  25. Thank you! I’m honored :) My first award! I don’t have a speech prepared — I’m not good with words but I’ll do my best to earn the blog award :D

I’m not new to writing – I started out on DiaryLand way back when. Then, deadjournal (I was that kid) and after a while I hopped over to livejournal (the grass looked greener). The difference between blogging and online journal keeping is that this time, it’s public and I’m sharing things in a way I’ve never shared before. I’m not keeping secrets, I’m not ranting and raving and I’m not ashamed of my parents being weird. Well.. maybe a little on the parent thing. I’m also sharing with family and none of my posts are private. I’m writing for myself and for my daughter.. so I have to be real.

Thank you, also, for introducing me to new blogs! I’ve found so many through this post already :)

    • You’re welcome, Wendy! I really enjoy your blog, and I like seeing the creative ways you introduce life to your daughter. Glad you are writing, and hope you continue to do so! :)

    • You’re welcome, Norah! My children still enjoy their dog toy, which we named “SoapBird” we won from your site!

Awesome! Thanks Melissa! Sorry for the late response but I haven’t been feeling very well at all lately. I’m in the midst of preparing my acceptance posts for the 7 x 7 Link award as well as the Candle Lighter Award Arindam just nominated me for!

    Again, thank you so much!

    • You’re welcome, Joe! Sorry you haven’t been well — but I bet by now you are back to full health. I took some time off blogging to deal with an issue I’ll be posting about tomorrow. I look forward to immersing myself back into all these creative amazing worlds, and catching up on great posts like yours.

  28. Happy New Year!! Here’s another award to place on your awards page — the Reader Appreciation Award. You were on my top readers list for making comments on my blog. So come on over to my blog and join me in my “mutual admiration society!”

    December 30, 2011
    • Thank you so much! I will be over as soon as I can, and I look forward to reading about your mutual admiration society! What a neat award, and I am very glad to accept! :)

  29. Happy New Year! Happy Blogging and Happy Getting Blog Awards!!! :)

  30. How do you do it, Melissa? How do you create these little bits of warmth with such deftness, it looks easy?

This post in itself is a recognition of your generous heart and constructive mind. Brilliant.

May this New Year bring more cheer, more energy and less rush to you, Adam and your beautiful children.

    • Why thank you, Priya! I appreciate your kind words. It’s easy to be nice, but not so easy to find others who continually reciprocate, as you do. Thanks for being a friend!

      January 9, 2012
  31. Melissa, I’m so touched! Thank you! I was just re-reading the second paragraph of one of your posts and so love how your words sound like a poem:

“A cold husk of a day. Late November in New England. Boots scraping over the forest undergrowth, buried beneath layers of dry, crackling leaves.”

This award is such a compliment coming from a writer such as yourself. And to be in such grand company, to boot! You, Mama’s Empty Nest, Wendy from Herding Cats, Amiable, Leah…
You have such special gifts, not only with your writing, but also in bringing an entire writing community together.

    January 4, 2012
    • Aw, thanks, Reeling! And it means a lot to me that you took the time out to quote those words. I hold poetry in such high esteem — your comment really made my day. :) You are in grand company, yes, and utterly deserving to be there.

Melissa, I am so remiss in not thanking you properly for the Candle Lighter award sooner! I was and am still so stunned I can hardly think of how to respond. You see, it is a first, and so utterly unexpected, that I had no idea what to do next. I am as proud of this award as I was of my first silver star in 2nd grade reading! I figured out a way to put it on the blog page too. So, THANK YOU so much. I’m delighted that this award has no rules since I still don’t know quite what to do.

    • Dor — I used to get those little stars too — and loved them! All the colorful ones were “ranked’ the same (as in blue was equal to red, etc.), then we had the silvers for super achievements, and then, hold your breath, the GOLD. I always imagined a whole row of gold stars next to my name, whenever one of my teachers would bring out a new chart. I’d become positively giddy with excitement. Of course it never happened :( but maybe I ought to start a new chart all for myself, now that I’m grown, and whenever I complete a routine duty (chores, cooking, etc.) I’ll give myself a star! It would be quite the inspiration. :)
